GXS Acquires Brazilian B2B Company "Interchange Servicos S.A."

GXS, one of the leading companies providing B2B e-commerce empowerment, announced in a press release that it has acquired one of Brazil's largest domestic providers of electronic data interchange (EDI) services, Interchange Servicos S.A.

The move enhances the market presence of GXS in the Brazilian B2B managed services space, as Interchange Servicos services over 450 large financial customers domestically, over 50 of them among the largest banks in the country.

GXS acquired the business from Banco Real, Citibank Brazil, EDS, an HP company, and Itau Unibanco.

I work for GXS so I thought I would offer a perspective here. A little background - GXS is an B2B e-commerce services provider that helps companies digitize transactions in their supply chain such as purchase orders, ship notices, commercial invoices and payments.

What's interesting here is how Brazil compares to the other BRICs in use of B2B e-commerce technologies. We have been working with government ministries and commercial entities in all four of the BRIC countries over the past few years. There is a high degree of interest from both public and private sector entities in establishing broader use of e-commerce within these emerging markets as it is viewed as a step towards increasing efficiency and competitiveness with Western nations. Interestingly, Brazil's adoption of e-commerce technologies far surpasses that of China, India and Russia. There is substantial activity, but little traction in China. India is just beginning to embrace e-commerce and Russia has not really started. I find this interesting, because China and India are viewed as the most technologically advanced by the West, but Brazil clearly leads in this category.
